Accessibility is not only about physical infrastructure, but also about how we respond to individual needs with empathy and care. A supportive airport environment can make all the difference for a child of determination and their caregivers."

Dr. Amer Al Zarooni, CEO of Al Jalila Foundation, expressed his gratitude to Dubai Airports for partnering on this initiative, which supports people of determination and their families toprepare for airport travel with confidence and ease. He said this step aligns with the UAE's national policy to empower people of determination and integrate them into society and public life, while also reflecting DXB’s efforts to enhance accessibility and ease travel experiences for all.

The travel simulation experience is one of several initiatives implemented by Dubai Airports to enhance the travel journey for people of determination and their caregivers. It is part of the airport's commitment to providing a more inclusive and accessible travel environment.

The experience was conducted with the support of trained Guest Experience Ambassadors in a calm and organised setting. This helped participants from Al Jalila Foundation feel more at ease while navigating the airport and preparing for future travel.

During the simulation, families had the opportunity to explore different areas of the airport and ask questions. This helped them build a sense of familiarity and confidence, making future travel experiences less stressful and more positive.

Many people of determination, especially those with autism spectrum disorder, face unique challenges when travelling through airports. These include unfamiliar procedures, sensory stimuli and crowded environments. The simulation experience helps children, and their families become familiar with each stage of the travel journey, from arriving at the airport and completing check-in, passport control and security screening, to reaching the boarding gates and arrival halls. This step-by-step exposure gives them the time they need to adapt at each phase of the process.

This initiative is part of Dubai Airports' strategy to make travel easier and more inclusive for everyone. Through its We All Meet the World Differently campaign, Dubai Airports adopts inclusive practices and provides continuous training for employees to ensure support for travellers with both visible and invisible challenges at every stage of their journey, from arrival to boarding.

Dubai International Airport is the first international airport in the world to be awarded the Certified Autism Center (CAC) designation by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES). These achievements reflect Dubai Airports' commitment to supporting neurodivergent travellers and their families and to reinforcing Dubai's position as one of the most inclusive and accessible cities in the world.

The travel simulation experience is one of several initiatives implemented by Dubai Airports to improve the travel experience for people of determination and their caregivers.

dubaibusiness,peopleofdetermination,airportservice

This achievement aligns with key priorities of the Dubai Economic Agenda D33, by championing talent development, social inclusion, and quality of life, as well as the UAE Year of Community, which includes the goal of creating inclusive spaces that encourage collaboration, a sense of belonging, and shared experiences.

Awarded by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES), renowned for its expertise in autism and sensory training, the journey to achieve Certified Autism Destination™ status was spearheaded by the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET). This milestone was made possible through the collective efforts of key stakeholders and partners, who worked together to enhance accessibility across all aspects of the visitor experience, from the aviation ecosystem to hotels, attractions, and transportation. Key initiatives included comprehensive staff training programmes, expanded visitor support at attractions, and the introduction of sensory guides and hidden disability lanyards to ensure a seamless and inclusive experience for all. Additionally, each certified location underwent an onsite review and received custom sensory guides developed by IBCCES as part of the process.

As part of the certification programme, DET collaborated with IBCCES to facilitate comprehensive autism and sensory awareness training for the city’s tourist-facing workforce. At the heart of this achievement is the ‘Dubai Way’ online training platform developed by Dubai College of Tourism (DCT), part of DET, to empower staff with the skills and knowledge to provide a more inclusive experience for People of Determination (those with special needs or disabilities).

DCT has also continued to offer its Inclusive Service programme – a self-paced course that can be followed on the online Dubai Way platform. It teaches applicants how best to cater and communicate with People of Determination, with the training modules featuring real-life stories, interactive sessions, and videos, fostering empathy and understanding while embedding diversity into everyday interactions with visitors.

In just over two years, the city has achieved the following milestones:

More than 70,000 individuals have received autism and sensory awareness training.

More than 300 hotels within the training and certification process, ensuring comfortable and inclusive stays for guests with autism and sensory sensitivities.

More than 15 attractions have earned IBCCES certifications in addition to beaches and parks.

His Excellency Issam Kazim, CEO of the Dubai Corporation for Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DCTCM), part of the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET), said: “Dubai’s designation as a Certified Autism Destination is a landmark moment in our accessibility journey, demonstrating a collective commitment to not only consistently developing infrastructure, but also enhancing skills and services across the city. Under the guidance of our visionary leadership, we are dedicated to further elevating the experience in Dubai for all residents and visitors, with accessibility as a core priority, and this recognition has been made possible thanks to the steadfast efforts and support of all our partners, including IBCCES, the aviation ecosystem, hotels, and attractions. This also marks another important step towards achieving the goals of the Dubai Economic Agenda D33, to further consolidate Dubai’s position as a leading global destination for business and leisure, and aligns with the priorities of the UAE Year of Community. As we continue to innovate and expand our offerings, we remain focused on making Dubai the best city to visit, live, and work in - for everyone.”

Myron Pincomb, IBCCES Board Chairman and CEO, said: “Dubai is raising the bar for accessible tourism, and IBCCES is honoured to support this initiative. This achievement represents a significant step in ensuring that all visitors, including autistic people and individuals with sensory needs, can explore and experience everything Dubai has to offer with confidence and ease.”

Dubai International (DXB), which in December 2023 was recognised as the first international airport to earn the Certified Autism Center™ designation, has successfully completed the expansion of its hidden disability and autism-inclusive training programme. This initiative equipped 45,000 employees – across the wider airport community, including partners and stakeholders – with the skills to better support hidden disabilities including autistic and sensory-sensitive travellers navigating both Dubai International (DXB) and Dubai World Central – Al Maktoum International (DWC).

Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports, said: “At Dubai Airports, we are proud to support Dubai’s journey towards becoming a Certified Autism Destination. As the first and last impression of the city for millions of travellers, we embrace our responsibility to create a welcoming, accessible, and inclusive environment for all. This milestone reflects our unwavering commitment to ensuring that every guest, regardless of their needs, enjoys a seamless and supportive travel experience at DXB. Through our oneDXB community, we continue to work closely with our stakeholders across the airports to enhance accessibility, provide specialised training for frontline teams, and design environments that are supportive of people of determination, including those with hidden disabilities such as autism. As the world’s busiest international airport, we recognise the importance of leading by example, and this milestone reinforces our dedication to making travel more compassionate and human-centric for all.”

For several years, Emirates has been on a journey to officially become the world’s first Autism Certified Airline™, receiving certifications for its check in areas and training more than 30,000 on-ground staff and cabin crew to support autistic customers in a myriad of ways.

Adel Al Redha, Deputy President, and Chief Operations Officer, Emirates, said: “Emirates has been driving progress in accessible travel for several years, in a mission to make the travel experience more inclusive. In April 2024, Emirates received Certified Autism Center™ Designations for our Dubai Check In facilities, including at our dedicated hub in Terminal 3 at Dubai International Airport. A year later, we are the world’s first autism certified airline – with more than 30,000 cabin crew and airport staff trained to support customers with autism. These significant achievements help build a strong foundation for Dubai to be celebrated as the first certified autism destination in the eastern hemisphere - giving travellers confidence that their journey to and from our iconic city will be supported. We continue to work hand in hand with the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism to create lasting change, break barriers, and be recognised as a world leading accessible destination. We have a social and professional responsibility to facilitate the travel journey for our autistic passengers.”

Support from attractions and landmarks throughout the city has also been paramount to achieving the Certified Autism Destination™ status. A key example is Expo City Dubai, which was designated as a Certified Autism Center™ in December 2024 following an extensive training process for its visitor-facing team on how best to support autistic and sensory-sensitive visitors.

Marjan Faraidooni, Chief of Education and Culture and Chief Human Resources Officer, Expo City Dubai, said: “By becoming a Certified Autism Destination™, Dubai demonstrates the potential to succeed – and thrive – in travel and tourism when accessibility and inclusion are prioritised, ensuring everyone has the opportunity to experience all Dubai has to offer. Expo City Dubai is proud to have contributed to this city-wide effort. Becoming a Certified Autism Center™ in 2024 was a milestone in our people-centric strategy to create an inclusive culture and environment for all who visit, live and work in Expo City, and we look forward to further collaborations and success stories as we progress on this journey.”

Dubai Holding Entertainment, which offers a range of leisure and entertainment options across Dubai, has a number of attractions that have obtained the Certified Autism Center™ status, including Motiongate Dubai and The Green Planet. The group has outlined a range of plans for more of its destinations to achieve the certification.

Alanood Al Hashemi, Vice President of Organisational Culture and Impact at Dubai Holding Entertainment, said: “We are proud of Dubai Holding Entertainment's contribution to Dubai's recognition as a Certified Autism Destination. We look forward to welcoming families from around the world to experience our exceptional and inclusive entertainment spaces here in Dubai.”

To further support inclusivity efforts, all certified locations in Dubai are being featured on the IBCCES Accessibility App, which is free to download. She also recommends creating a visual travel schedule and choosing flight times that suit your child’s routine - this can be done by referring to Dubai Airports’ website and going through the travel planner for details on the inclusive journey and useful tips embedded within.

Yasmin brings along noise-cancelling headphones, fidget toys, and sunglasses to help Ellis manage sensory overload.

“What might look like a meltdown is often just a way of coping. We’re not asking for special treatment—just a little understanding,” she explains.

Hassan Dennaoui (Big Hass)
For Big Hass, preparation begins days before travel. He recommends walking children through the entire journey ahead of time, making a countdown, and building excitement together. Families can also contact Dubai Airports about the Travel Safari programme, which allows children to conduct travel rehearsals ahead of their actual trip to support with familiarisation and readiness. On travel day, he emphasises the importance of giving yourself plenty of time and not rushing.

He suggests creating a checklist of essentials tailored to your child's specific needs, including favourite foods, comfort items, entertainment devices, backup chargers, and spare clothes. Big Hass also highlights the value of the Sunflower Lanyard for smoother airport navigation.

"People on the autism spectrum have no malice or hate inside them. Once you try to understand autism, you'll understand the hearts of people on the spectrum, and that's the most beautiful thing," he shares.

Ambreen Suhaib
Ambreen recommends packing a dedicated kit with sensory toys, an iPad, snacks, noise-cancelling headphones, and a spare change of clothes. She advises picking up the Sunflower Lanyard on arrival—even if your child won’t wear it, you can wear it yourself and still receive support. She also suggests checking the airport map in advance, dividing responsibilities if travelling with family, and letting employees know if you prefer to board first or last. Look for the sunflower sign on queues for immigration and police, this will lead to the priority route.

“Autism isn’t always visible. You may not see it, but it’s there. Stimming—things like rocking, clapping, or making sounds—is how our children self-regulate in overwhelming places like airports. Meltdowns aren’t bad behaviour—they’re signs of distress. Please don’t stare. Be kind.”

Join the Conversation
Throughout April, Dubai Airports is encouraging more parents to join the conversation. Whether it's your go-to packing list, boarding routine, or a quiet moment that helped—it could make a real difference for another family. Parents can share their tips and stories on social using #AutismFriendlyTravel and tagging @DXB.

A more supportive journey at DXB
Dubai International (DXB) is a Certified Autism Center, providing a range of services to make travel more autism-friendly, including:

The Sunflower Lanyard: a discreet way to signal hidden disabilities that provides access to priority lanes and an autism-friendly route through check-in, passport control, security checkpoints, and boarding. The partnership aims to not only enhance services for travellers with visible and hidden disabilities but also to drive long-term social change, setting new standards for accessibility in the aviation industry.

The MoU was signed by H.E. Jamal Al-Hai, Deputy CEO of Dubai Airports and Miatha Al Shamsi, CEO Community Empowerment Sector of CDA, in the presence of H.E. Hessa bint Essa Buhumaid, Director General of CDA, in the presence of senior representatives from both organisations and the wider aviation community attending the Expo.

The two entities will work together to identify and address key needs, leveraging CDA's expertise to implement effective solutions. By sharing resources and knowledge, they aim to contribute to Dubai's broader social agenda, ensuring that DXB and DWC become a place where every guest feels welcomed and supported.

Highlighting the importance of this partnership, Jamal Al-Hai said, “Working with the Community Development Authority is crucial in our mission to make our airports a more inclusive space. Their insights will help us address specific needs, setting a new benchmark for how airports can support all travellers. This MoU represents our joint effort to break down barriers and shape a future where air travel is accessible for everyone.”

H.E. Hessa Bint Essa Buhumaid, Director General of CDA: “We are proud to collaborate with Dubai Airports at the AccessAbilities Expo to further enhance the experience for people of determination. This partnership underscores our commitment to promoting inclusivity and ensuring that Dubai is a city where everyone, regardless of their abilities, can thrive. Through this MoU, we aim to provide essential support and create solutions that will make air travel more accessible and enjoyable for people of determination. Together, we are setting a new standard in ensuring that all individuals have the opportunity to travel with dignity and ease”.

Under the agreement, Dubai Airports will incorporate CDA’s guidance to improve services, including using the Sanad communication platform. The Sanad Relay Center connects people with hearing disabilities to sign language specialists via video calls, facilitating smoother communication. To support this, Dubai Airports will map the service within its centres, procure necessary equipment, and train frontline staff.

Additionally, Dubai Airports will align its processes with CDA’s existing channels to safeguard the rights of people of determination (POD), ensuring a safe environment free from discrimination. This includes linking the system to their customer service platform for quick and effective response to any concerns. The partnership also supports the integration of the Sanad Smart Card, offering tailored privileges and services for people with disabilities. Dubai Airports will help build a database to design targeted programmes and encourage wider stakeholder participation.

A joint annual calendar of events will be curated, with Dubai Airports and CDA planning free events in collaboration with other POD centres. This collaboration further brings benefits such as expertise support for DXB’s Autism Project, joint promotional campaigns, enhanced staff training, and contributions to inclusive airport design principles.

Dubai Airports has introduced several initiatives to support people of determination, including the Sunflower Lanyard programme, which discreetly identifies guests with hidden disabilities and grants them access to priority lanes and an autism-friendly route. A pre-travel planner offers a visual guide to ease navigation, and a bespoke training programme for 33,000 staff enhances understanding of visible and non-visible disabilities. Additional support for POD at DXB includes complimentary parking, dedicated taxis, wheelchair services, and specialised assistance at customs.

airportservice,dubaibusiness

The event, held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, took place at the Dubai World Trade Centre from 2 to 3 October 2024.

The agreement was signed by Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports and Dr. Waleed Alnuaimi, CEO of Etihad ESCO.

Sharing his insights on the initiative, Griffiths said, “Airports are significant energy consumers, but with that comes tremendous opportunity and responsibility to drive real change. For us, this is not just about installing solar panels; it’s about embedding sustainability into the core of everything we do. Every kilowatt we generate from renewable sources brings us closer to shrinking our carbon footprint and future-proofing our operations. This is about setting the standard and leading the way for what a truly sustainable airport can achieve.”

His Excellency Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer said: "This initiative aligns with His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum's vision to establish Dubai as one of the most sustainable cities in the world. While our roadmap outlines clear targets of achieving 25% of the energy mix from clean energy sources by 2030, and 100% by 2050, we are proactively accelerating our efforts. We anticipate surpassing these goals, potentially reaching 27% clean energy capacity as early as 2030, which would enable us to achieve our 2050 vision ahead of schedule. Undoubtedly, innovation and cutting-edge technologies are instrumental in expediting our progress towards a greener future.

This phased project of total 39MWp of clean energy, which will be fully operational by 2026, involves the installation of 62,904 solar panels across Dubai International (DXB) and Dubai World Central - Al Maktoum International (DWC) airports, set to generate 60,346MWh annually. It marks a significant stride toward decarbonising airport operations.

The solar panels, which will span passenger terminals and concourses across both airports, are expected to offset 23,000 tonnes of CO2 annually — equivalent to taking 5,000 cars off the road or powering 3,000 homes for a year. The energy generated will meet 6.5% of DXB’s power needs and 20% of DWC’s, reinforcing Dubai Airports' long-term vision for cleaner, smarter, and more sustainable operations.

Dr. Waleed Alnuaimi, CEO of Etihad ESCO, remarked, “Our longstanding partnership with Dubai Airports plays a pivotal role in our strategy to accelerate Dubai’s sustainability agenda. By broadening the solar footprint and implementing transformative initiatives like Shams Dubai, we are not only reducing energy demand but also driving the adoption of sustainable energy solutions across the emirate. This project, and others like it, demonstrates our commitment to building an integrated ecosystem that aligns with Dubai’s vision for a greener, more energy-efficient future.”

This solar initiative complements a series of ongoing environmental sustainability efforts by Dubai Airports, from strategic partnerships in the aviation sector to collaborative efforts within the oneDXB community, which includes airlines, service providers, and regulatory authorities managing the airport’s critical touchpoints. This lounge is the first of its kind, designed to comprehensively address the diverse needs of People of Determination (POD), including those with autism and hidden disabilities, offering a safe, comfortable space within the bustling airport environment.

A collaborative effort by Dubai Airports and dnata, the lounge operator, the Assisted Travel Lounge reinforces Dubai Airports’ commitment to accessibility and inclusivity. This pilot lounge is part of a multi-million-dirham programme, with future expansion plans already in place to open similar lounges in other terminals.

Majed Al Joker, Chief Operating Officer at Dubai Airports, said: “This lounge reflects our dedication to ensuring that DXB is a welcoming space for People of Determination. It is a unique facility, meticulously designed to align with Dubai's vision of being a truly inclusive city for all. It ensures that every detail, from the ambience to the furniture, contributes to a calm and accessible environment and is a major leap forward in our mission to create a seamless travel experience for all guests, regardless of their individual needs”.

The lounge's thoughtful design, created by Dubai Airports’ design team, exemplifies key principles that align with the values and ambitions of both DXB and the city of Dubai. Prioritising user needs, the design seamlessly integrates each element within the broader context of the airport’s spaces, enhancing the overall guest experience.

The interior design reflects Dubai’s forward-thinking spirit, blending modern aesthetics with functionality. Guided by the Dubai Universal Design Code, the lounge features designated wheelchair areas, tactile surfaces for easy navigation, dedicated seating for the hearing-impaired that facilitates face-to-face communication with employees, a decompression zone for individuals with autism, and a dedicated area for unaccompanied minors. Materials, finishes, and lighting have been thoughtfully selected to create a serene atmosphere, offering travellers a peaceful retreat.

Jaffar Dawood, Senior Vice President, Airport Operations - UAE and MEA, dnata, said: “We are committed to making air travel more inclusive and accommodating for passengers with diverse needs. This unique lounge marks an important milestone in providing extra comfort and care to people of determination. Our experienced, highly trained team will make every effort to deliver an exceptional experience for all visitors. Together with Dubai Airports, we look forward to further enhancing our services for a seamless journey for everyone.”

The flagship lounge is a key element of Dubai Airports' broader POD strategy, designed to cater to the diverse needs of all guests. This strategy encompasses a range of initiatives aimed at ensuring an inclusive and seamless travel experience, including the Sunflower Lanyard Programme, which discreetly identifies and assists POD guests, granting access to priority lanes and an autism-friendly route, prioritising check-in, passport control, security checkpoints, and boarding.

Additionally, DXB offers a bespoke hidden disability service training programme for airport employees, complimentary two-hour parking, dedicated taxis, and wheelchair services, all significant milestones in DXB’s commitment to making travel accessible to everyone.

These efforts have garnered significant recognition for Dubai Airports. In 2022, DXB received an accreditation from the Airports Council International (ACI) under its Accessibility Enhancement Accreditation Programme, a first-of-its-kind initiative that recognises global airports’ commitment to accessible travel operations. The airport was also certified as Autism-friendly by Dubai Autism Centre (DAC) and became the first international airport to earn a certified Autism Centre (CAC) designation, awarded by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES).

dubaibusiness,airportservice

This stunning exhibition reaffirms Dubai Airports' commitment to conservation and sustainability."

The exhibition is a visual journey told through two powerful lenses— 'The 11th Hour' and ‘Moments in Time’. ‘The 11thHour’ captures the beauty and fragility of endangered species, featuring awe-inspiring shots like the majestic flight of great white sharks and the poignant presence of Africa's last tuskers. ‘Moments in Time’ showcases the planet’s biodiversity through memorable moments in Fallows' career. Commenting on the exhibition, Fallows said, “If a picture is worth a thousand words, I hope the narrative conveyed through these photographs speaks volumes as to the magnificence of the iconic species we share our planet with. It has been my honour to spend a life in their company, and my duty to share this visual journey of creating awareness and inspiring hope through the art of photography.”

Adding an interactive element, guests can scan QR codes to learn more about the stories behind the photographs’ creation and how they can contribute to conservation efforts and protect our precious wildlife heritage. This innovative approach ensures the exhibition inspires and empowers visitors to take meaningful action.
With its captivating visuals and urgent message, Chris Fallows’ wildlife exhibition at DXB promises to leave a lasting mark on all who experience it, fostering a deeper commitment and connection to our planet's incredible biodiversity.

sustainability,airportservice

To have the airport back up and running is no small feat. 2,155 flights were cancelled and 115 were diverted. We had to work closely with our airline partners and service providers to rework schedules, boost manpower and look after all those who had been disrupted. “I’m continuously amazed with the unwavering dedication of our Dubai Airports employees, airline partners, government agencies, commercial partners and service partners. It has been the most challenging adverse weather event we’ve had to navigate, and our people and partners worked tirelessly to keep the operation running and to assist our guests.”

31 flights were diverted to Dubai World Central (DWC) and by 19 April, all guests at the airport were successfully supported and continued onwards to complete their travel plans. Guest welfare remained a key priority throughout the disruption and although there were initial challenges in transporting supplies with road closures around DXB and DWC, over 75,000 food packs were delivered across both airports.

“While certain challenges remain, including processing the baggage backlog, we’re working closely with our service partners but know there’s still more work to be done and once again thank guests for their patience while we work through this,” Griffiths added.

“We’re deeply saddened by the ongoing impact of the heavy rainfall on affected communities and businesses across the UAE. We’re also supporting our own people who were badly affected by the weather and will continue to support wherever we can.”

As normal operations resume, guests should arrive at their terminal only three hours ahead of their flight departure time to avoid unnecessary congestion and facilitate smoother operations.

airportstaff,dubaitravel,airportservice

This achievement highlights Dubai Airports’ unwavering commitment to elevating the travel experience and making it easier for persons with disabilities while also supporting Dubai's pursuit of becoming a Certified Autism Destination™.

Majed Al Joker, Chief Operating Officer at Dubai Airports, said: “On behalf of our entire DXB community, we are incredibly proud of this achievement and recognition. It’s a testament to our unwavering commitment to providing an inclusive travel experience for all our guests – including those with hidden disabilities – has been recognised. In line with UAE Vision 2021 and Dubai Plan 2021 for the Emirate to be the world’s leading disability-friendly city, we’re dedicated to promoting the inclusion of all guests and creating an airport environment where everyone feels welcomed and supported. It’s an honour to work closely with the Department of Economy and Tourism (DET) and IBCCES team to address challenges in this area.”

He added: “Our success in this endeavour is a result of collaborative efforts with our strategic partners in the airport community, including government entities, airlines and service partners, to deliver a seamless experience for all our guests from kerb to boarding gate.”

Essa Bin Hadher, General Manager at Dubai College of Tourism, commented: “The road to a fully accessible destination is reliant on the continued support of our stakeholders and partners, who contribute to enriching the visitor experience from their moment of arrival in the city until their departure. Dubai International Airport is the first touchpoint in the traveller journey, therefore, this achievement is a huge step towards our accessible goals. At Dubai College of Tourism, we provide accessible training to stakeholders across the tourism ecosystem, via our Dubai Way training platform designed to provide individuals employed in tourist-facing roles with the knowledge and skills to ensure the best level of customer service to People of Determination. This autism-friendly recognition for Dubai International Airport is further evidence that under the guidance of our visionary leadership, inclusivity and accessibility will remain at the heart of Dubai’s tourism strategy, aligned with the Dubai Economic Agenda, D33, to further consolidate Dubai's status as one of the top three global cities for business and leisure.”

The International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES) awards the Certified Autism Center™ (CAC) designation to recognise organisations committed to understanding and accommodating the needs of autistic and sensory-sensitive individuals. The airport's accomplishment is a pivotal achievement in Dubai's city-wide initiative, led by the Department of Economy and Tourism (DET), working to establish the city as a Certified Autism Destination™ (CAD). IBCCES grants this designation to communities offering a diverse range of autism-certified accommodations, leisure, and entertainment options that can foster a more welcoming environment for autistic guests, those with sensory sensitivities, and their families.

Dubai International (DXB) received the certification following a thorough on-site assessment of all three terminals conducted by IBCCES. During the assessment, IBCCES experienced the tailored services introduced by the Sunflower Lanyard Programme. The programme discreetly identifies and assists POD guests and grants access to prioritised routes for check-in, passport control, security checkpoints, and boarding, which can be availed when wearing a sunflower lanyard. Specially trained Guest Experience Ambassadors and employees wearing a sunflower pin are also always readily available to assist and support POD travellers throughout their airport journey.

Complementing this and introduced as part of its ‘We all meet the world differently' initiative, launched in 2022, a bespoke hidden disability service training and awareness programme was curated and delivered to 33,000 airport staff across DXB service providers to enhance their knowledge and understanding of visible and non-visible disabilities. Additionally, a travel planner was introduced to provide a step-by-step visual guide for passengers with hidden disabilities, to help them navigate the airport before their journey. Complimentary two-hour parking, specialised assistance at customs and immigration, dedicated taxis, and wheelchair services are all integral to DXB’s POD service offering.

“We're proud to partner with Dubai Airports, supporting its commitment to inclusive travel experiences," stated Myron Pincomb, IBCCES Board Chairman. "This certification reflects the airport operator's dedication to exceptional service and aligns with Dubai's vision for a more accessible city. Through our partnership, we empower airport staff with skills and tools to create a more welcoming environment for autistic and sensory-sensitive travellers, contributing to an enhanced travel experience for all."

IBCCES has been the leader in cognitive disorder training and certification for healthcare, education, and corporate professionals around the globe for more than 20 years. IBCCES is the only global credentialing board providing travel and entertainment organisations with training and certification from subject-matter experts and autistic self-advocates, and other resources, as well as long-term support that helps them understand how to better accommodate and assist autistic or sensory-sensitive visitors and their families.

IBCCES also created AutismTravel.com, a free online resource for families that lists certified destinations and connects families to other resources and each other. Each destination listed on the site has met the CAC requirements.

airportservice,dubaibusiness

The hub is preparing for an exceptional spike in guest numbers on Friday, December 22, the busiest day for the airport, welcoming an estimated 279,000 passengers.

As Dubai continues to cement itself as a popular destination during the winter, a surge in arrivals is anticipated to hit during the last two weekends of the year, with half a million passengers – mainly comprising point to point traffic, expected to arrive over six days from December 22 to 24, and from December 29 to 31.

Whether departing to go home for the holidays, arriving in Dubai to celebrate the festive season or simply passing through, Dubai Airports aims to provide guests with a truly memorable experience.

Across Terminals 1, 2 and 3, the airport will host a series of activities, from a 3D photo opportunity in a giant snow globe and visits form a range of festive performers who will be handing out chocolates and other gifts, to the chance for little travellers to meet Santa and his elves and receive special presents.

“We welcomed new airlines and additional flights at DXB at the start of the winter to help attract a growing number of visitors to Dubai and connect them to even more cities. With the holiday spirit in full swing, we’re prepared for this travel peak – your passport to a memorable experience. Backed by a state-of-the-art airport operations control centre, our dedicated teams across DXB are committed to making the festive travel experience cheerful and bright. Working closely with our partners to ensure your holiday travel is truly magical, we hope the added festive-themed activities will add a touch of wonder to their experience at DXB,” said Essa Al Shamsi, Senior Vice President of Terminal Operations at Dubai Airports.

Here are DXB’s top tips to beat the festive rush.

If you’re flying with Emirates, use the airline’s convenient home, early and self-service check-in facilities as well as a city check-in option at ICD Brookfield Place in the DIFC area in Dubai and the dedicated facility in Ajman.

flydubai passengers should arrive at least four hours before their departure time.

If you’re travelling with other airlines, arrive at DXB no earlier than three hours before the scheduled departure time. Use online check-in where available to save time.

Families with children over the age of 12 can use Smart Gates to speed up the passport control process.

Be aware of the latest travel regulations for the destination you’re travelling to, and be prepared with all the necessary travel documents.

Weigh luggage at home, assemble documents in advance and be prepared for security checks to minimise stress and delays.

Properly pack spare batteries and power banks in your hand luggage.

Say your goodbyes at home as only passengers will be allowed inside the terminals during peak periods.

Use Dubai Metro to get to and from the airport’s Terminals 1 and 3. Metro operating times are generally extended during festive holidays and peak periods at DXB.

Dubai Airports and the Road and Transport Authority have urged motorists to use alternate routes as the Airport Road leading to Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 is expected to experience congestion during peak hours during the busy travel period.

Access to the arrivals’ forecourts in both Terminals 1 and 3 is limited to public transport and other authorised airport vehicles only. Those visiting the airport to pick-up guests should use DXB’s designated car parks or valet services.

Once at the airport, enjoy DXB’s world class facilities – including restaurants, duty free shopping, hotel and exclusive lounge access before their flight.

pressrelease,dubaitravel,airportservice,dubaibusiness

<pp:caseid>612671</pp:caseid>

Dubai Airports proudly marks the one-year anniversary of its ground-breaking 'We All Meet the World Differently' programme, just ahead of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities on 3rd December.

The two-year programme, a collaborative effort with various stakeholders placing community engagement at its core, has steadfastly advanced initiatives to foster an inclusive environment across Dubai International (DXB). This aligns with Dubai's vision to be the world’s leading disability-friendly city, ensuring a barrier-free community that empowers and welcomes all People of Determination (POD) travellers with hidden disabilities.

Majed Al Joker, COO of Dubai Airports, said, “As we celebrate the success of our comprehensive programme, we are humbled by the transformative impact it has had on our guests. Dubai Airports remains resolute in our pursuit to create an environment where every individual, regardless of their abilities, feels empowered and welcomed."

The programme includes tailored services— the Sunflower Lanyard Programme discreetly identifies and assists POD guests, granting access to priority lanes and an autism-friendly route prioritising check-in, passport control, security checkpoints, and boarding. Complementing this, the launch of a travel planner offers a step-by-step visual guide for passengers with hidden disabilities to navigate the airport seamlessly.

A bespoke hidden disability service training and awareness programme was curated and launched, targeting 33,000 airport staff across DXB service providers to enhance their knowledge and understanding of visible and non-visible disabilities. Additionally, complimentary two-hour parking, specialised assistance at customs and immigration, dedicated taxis, and wheelchair services— marked significant milestones in DXB’s commitment to making tourism accessible for all.

DXB customised its airport amenities to meet the distinctive requirements of POD, significantly enhancing their travel experience. To introduce these new services and familiarise guests and their families with the airport environment, the operator synchronised multiple 'Travel Safari' tours in collaboration with specialised centres. Offering a hands-on walkthrough, these tours guided participants through essential airport procedures, from check-in to boarding, enabling them to experience the airport environment before their travel date.

Savita, mother of Eshan Akash, a student at the Dubai Autism Center, commended the positive impact of DXB's amenities. She commented, “There are many things which POD experience when they are travelling. It’s very difficult for them to express and that’s why anxiety can bring out unpleasant behaviours. In that way, a quiet dedicated sensory area where they can regulate their sensory needs is very important. I’m amazed at DXB, their staff awareness, training and how dedicated they are in understanding our needs. This is the standard I think the world should follow and DXB is now going to be a benchmark for all POD. How we experienced the check-in, baggage claim and boarding gate, it was beyond my expectations.”

Recent partnerships with the Dubai Autism Center, receiving the Autism-Friendly Certificate, and the recognition of Accessibility Accreditation from the Airports Council International (ACI) have solidified Dubai Airports’ commitment to creating a safe, accessible, and empowering airport experience for all.

The operator is working closely with partners and stakeholders on the second phase of the rollout for more innovative solutions, including connected airports, lounges, quiet rooms, and continued airport safari tours.

airportservice,dubaibusiness
