The back-to-school surge follows a record-breaking first half of 2025, which saw Dubai welcome 9.88 million international overnight visitors—a 6% increase year-on-year—and DXB handle over 46 million guests, reaffirming its position as the world’s biggest international airport.

Dubai Airports is working with the oneDXB community including airlines, control authorities, and commercial and service partners, to ensure a seamless, stress-free journey for every guest during this busy travel period. Here are some top essential tips and guidance to help guests navigate the airport with ease.

Arrivals tips for a smooth welcome at DXB:

• For those travelling with families, children over the age of 12 can use Smart Gates to speed up the passport control process.      
• Keep passports, boarding passes, and any necessary visas handy to speed up clearance.
• Make the most of the DXB experience with various amenities in lounges, dining and shopping outlets, and duty-free. 
• Use the Dubai Metro, with stations conveniently located at DXB’s Terminals 1 and 3. Guests can also choose from a variety of other transport options, including Uber, Careem, RTA taxis, or car rentals.
• Enhanced support is available for People of Determination, including marked accessibility routes, discreet assistance for guests wearing Sunflower Lanyards, and a dedicated Assisted Travel Lounge in Terminal 2.

In the second quarter alone, DXB served 22.5 million guests, an increase of 3.1% over the same period last year. April emerged as the busiest month of the quarter and the most active April on record, with 8 million guests passing through the terminals.

As we enter the second half of the year, travel activity is expected to accelerate, beginning with the late-summer peak and leading into a winter season filled with high-profile events across entertainment, sport, and business. A standout moment will be the Dubai Airshow 2025, which is set to surpass previous records and showcase the bold vision shaping the future of aviation and aerospace. Based on our performance to date and a positive outlook, we expect the annual traffic to reach 96 million this year, bringing us closer to the symbolic 100 million milestone.”

Performance and Efficiency
Average monthly traffic in H1 stood at approximately 7.7 million, with daily volumes averaging 254,000. January was the busiest month of the period and also set a new monthly record, with 8.5 million guests.

DXB handled 222,000 total flights during the first half of the year, while the load factor reached 76%. A total of 41.8 million bags were processed, with 91% delivered within 45 minutes on arrival. The mishandled baggage rate remained low at just 2 bags per 1,000 guests, significantly outperforming the 2024 industry average of 6.3 reported by SITA. The airport is on track to process over 85 million bags by year-end, surpassing its previous record of 81.2 million set in 2024. The busiest baggage days were between January 3-5, with daily volumes reaching 300,000 bags.

Efficiency at key guest touchpoints also remained consistently high. In the first half, 99.2% of guests cleared departure passport control in under 10 minutes, 98.4% cleared arrivals in under 15 minutes, and 98.7% passed through security checks in under 5 minutes. *

Top Markets and Destinations
India remained DXB’s largest country market in H1 with 5.9 million guests, followed by Saudi Arabia with 3.6 million, the United Kingdom with 3.0 million, Pakistan with 2.1 million, and the United States with 1.6 million guests. London was the busiest city destination with 1.8 million guests, followed by Riyadh with 1.5 million, Mumbai with 1.2 million, Jeddah and New Delhi with 1.1 million each, and Istanbul with 982,000 guests.

Cargo and Connectivity
DXB handled just over 1 million tonnes of cargo in the first half of 2025, reflecting a marginal increase of 0.1% compared to the previous year. The airport remains a key contributor to global trade and logistics. 
Currently, DXB is connected to more than 269 destinations in over 107 countries, served by a network of over 92 international carriers. This breadth of connectivity continues to underpin Dubai’s appeal as a hub for tourism, commerce, investment, and long-term growth.

Outlook
With the second half underway, Dubai is preparing for a surge in global travel and events, with DXB playing a central role. From the late-summer travel rush related to reopening of schools, to a packed winter calendar, activity is set to intensify. The upcoming Dubai Airshow 2025 is expected to be a landmark event, reflecting not only the scale of aviation in the region but also the vision shaping its future.

The Ta'alouf Programme, which Al Jalila Foundation launched 13 years ago, serves as a vital pillar in empowering families of people of determination and educators. It equips them with the knowledge and skills needed to understand children's behavioural, psychological and educational needs. The programme supports the integration of people of determination into society, particularly for those facing challenges such as autism spectrum disorder, Down syndrome, mental delays and others. It focuses on unlocking their potential and turning challenges into opportunities for skill building.

The initiative was carried out in collaboration with teams from the oneDXB community (a network of stakeholders involved in the operations and passenger experience at DXB), caregivers, volunteers and airport front-line staff. It aligns with the goals of the UAE Year of the Community and reflects a shared belief in the importance of collective action to create a more inclusive and supportive travel experience for families of people of determination.

The travel simulation experience is one of several initiatives implemented by Dubai Airports to enhance the travel journey for people of determination and their caregivers. It is part of the airport's commitment to providing a more inclusive and accessible travel environment.

The experience was conducted with the support of trained Guest Experience Ambassadors in a calm and organised setting. This helped participants from Al Jalila Foundation feel more at ease while navigating the airport and preparing for future travel.

During the simulation, families had the opportunity to explore different areas of the airport and ask questions. This helped them build a sense of familiarity and confidence, making future travel experiences less stressful and more positive.

Many people of determination, especially those with autism spectrum disorder, face unique challenges when travelling through airports. These include unfamiliar procedures, sensory stimuli and crowded environments. The simulation experience helps children, and their families become familiar with each stage of the travel journey, from arriving at the airport and completing check-in, passport control and security screening, to reaching the boarding gates and arrival halls. This step-by-step exposure gives them the time they need to adapt at each phase of the process.

This initiative is part of Dubai Airports' strategy to make travel easier and more inclusive for everyone. Through its We All Meet the World Differently campaign, Dubai Airports adopts inclusive practices and provides continuous training for employees to ensure support for travellers with both visible and invisible challenges at every stage of their journey, from arrival to boarding.

Dubai International Airport is the first international airport in the world to be awarded the Certified Autism Center (CAC) designation by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES). These achievements reflect Dubai Airports' commitment to supporting neurodivergent travellers and their families and to reinforcing Dubai's position as one of the most inclusive and accessible cities in the world.

The travel simulation experience is one of several initiatives implemented by Dubai Airports to improve the travel experience for people of determination and their caregivers.

Daily volumes are forecast to average over 265,000 with the busiest day on 5 July for both departures and transfer traffic. Dubai Airports, alongside its stakeholders, has activated an integrated summer readiness plan to ensure guest journeys remain safe and efficient.

While the wider regional situation has led to some delays and cancellations across the network, the oneDXB community has been working around the clock to support guests, provide welfare, and maintain service continuity. Supported by a real-time monitoring and predictive system to optimise manpower and resource utilisation. DXB continues to monitor the situation in close coordination with authorities and airline partners, prioritising the safety of all guests and employees on the ground and through to take-off.

Guests departing in the coming days are encouraged to follow these key tips to ensure a smoother airport experience:

• For those travelling with families, children over the age of 12 can use Smart Gates to speed up the passport control process.
• Arrive no earlier than three hours before departure.
• Utilise online check-in, self-service kiosks and bag drop at DXB Terminal 3.
• DUBZ provides home check-in and baggage collection services, allowing guests to complete their airport formalities from the comfort of their home or hotel.
• Stay informed on flight and gate updates with DXB Express Maps, the wayfinding platform that helps you navigate the airport with a quick QR code scan and search.
• Enhanced support is available for People of Determination, including marked accessibility routes, discreet assistance for guests wearing Sunflower Lanyards from trained staff, and a dedicated Assisted Travel Lounge in DXB Terminal 2.
• Once at the airport, travellers can enjoy DXB’s full range of facilities including restaurants, duty free shopping and lounges to relax before their flight.

This year, approximately 3,100 pilgrims are set to depart from DXB on 28 dedicated flights operated by Emirates, flydubai, Saudia, and flynas. The official delegation from the Government of Dubai will commence their journey on the first official Hajj flight from Terminal 3 on 1 June 2025. To ensure a streamlined experience, Dubai Airports, in collaboration with the oneDXB community, including Dubai Police, General Directorate of Identity and Foreigners Affairs-Dubai (GDRFA), Dubai Customs, Dubai Corporation for Ambulance Services, dnata, and airline partners, has implemented the following measures:

• Dedicated check-in counters across Terminals 1, 2, and 3.
• Prayer rooms and changing facilities in all terminals for Ihram preparation.
• Multilingual Guest Experience Ambassadors and Hajj Committee support desks.
• Designated baggage carousels for the secure handling of Zamzam water.

Pilgrims are advised to arrive at the airport at least four hours prior to departure and to carry all required travel documents, including passport, Emirates ID, Hajj permit, and vaccination certificate.

"These journeys are personal, profound, and often once in a lifetime," said Essa Al Shamsi, Senior Vice President of Terminal Operations at Dubai Airports. “Through the efforts of our people and the oneDXB community, we want to ensure every pilgrim departs with confidence and returns with ease.”

The pilgrims are expected to return between 9 and 12 June. Preparations are in place to provide a warm welcome, coordinated baggage support, and a small token of appreciation upon arrival. The Hajj season coincides with the summer travel peak and the Eid Al Adha holiday, during which DXB anticipates a significant increase in guest volumes. Dubai Airports remains committed to maintaining operational excellence and ensuring a smooth travel experience for all passengers during this period.

Traffic was up 1.5% compared to the same period in 2024, despite a record-breaking Q1 last year. January alone saw the highest monthly traffic ever recorded at DXB - welcoming 8.5 million guests – an achievement made possible not just by infrastructure, but by the coordinated effort of thousands of people behind the scenes.

India retained its position as DXB’s top destination country, with 3 million guests, followed by Saudi Arabia (1.9 million), the UK (1.5 million), Pakistan (1 million), the US (804,000), and Germany (738,000). At the city level, London led with 935,000 guests, followed by Riyadh (759,000), Jeddah (627,000), Mumbai (615,000), and New Delhi (564,000). Leisure travel also surged during the quarter, driven by a seasonal peak at the start of the year, Eid holidays and spring break, with double-digit increases in traffic to destinations such as the Czech Republic (+30.6%), Vietnam (+28.6%), and Spain (+20.2%).

Cargo volumes registered a minor contraction of 3.6% year-on-year during the first quarter with DXB handling 517,000 tonnes of cargo. 

While the numbers tell one story, it’s the people behind DXB’s peak performance who continue to make the real difference. Across its terminals, the dedication, quick thinking, and guest-first mindset of the entire oneDXB community – from Dubai Airports’ teams to its government partners, airlines, and commercial operators – plays a critical role across every touchpoint, turning operational excellence into exceptional guest experiences. 

For example, an exceptional guest experience that was delivered by  our DXB Lost and Found team who worked with Dubai Police to recover and return a bag containing AED 102,000 in cash, passports and personal documents within just 30 minutes of it being reported missing, ensuring peace of mind in a moment of crisis for two brothers who were travelling home after receiving news that a family member had passed away. Or immigration officer Abdullah Al Baloushi, who kindly stopped a departing guest in a wheelchair, not for an inspection but to give her son a little more time to bid her farewell. The act was recognised and praised by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, who personally acknowledged it on social media: “A salute to whoever brings a smile or joy to a traveller’s heart. This is the Dubai we want."

DXB also recorded 111,000 flight movements in Q1, up 1.9% over the same period last year, with an average of 215 guests per flight. Despite the continued growth in guest volumes, DXB sustained high levels of operational efficiency. More than 21 million bags were processed in Q1, with the rate of mishandled baggage reduced to fewer than 1.95 bags per 1,000 guests, translating to a success rate of 99.8%. 

Meanwhile, the use of real-time monitoring systems and biometric passport control helped ensure that more than 95% of guests experienced minimal wait times across key airport touchpoints. Accessibility enhancements, including dedicated services for People of Determination and guests with hidden disabilities, further demonstrate DXB’s commitment to inclusive, guest-centric travel.

That consistency is backed by a strong organisational culture. In Q1, Dubai Airports was recognised with the Gallup Exceptional Workplace Award, a reflection of its long-standing investment in employee wellbeing, engagement, and leadership development. It’s this commitment to people – both employees and guests – that helps show how an exceptional workplace culture drives real results.

In March, DXB was also named the world’s busiest international airport by Airports Council International (ACI) for the 11^th consecutive year. The airport connects travellers to 269 destinations in 106 countries, served by 101 international carriers.

Dubai Airports has expanded its autism-inclusive training programme, equipping 45,000 employees - across the wider airport community, including partners and stakeholders - to better assist autistic and sensory-sensitive travellers navigating Dubai International (DXB) and Dubai World Central – Al Maktoum International (DWC). The initiative aligns with Dubai's broader ambition of becoming a Certified Autism Destination™ (CAD).

DXB is the world's first international airport to earn the Certified Autism Centre™ (CAC) designation, awarded by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES) and is also Autism-Certified by the Dubai Autism Centre (DAC). The expanded training programme is part of Dubai Airports’ wider strategy to ensure a supportive airport experience for guests with specific needs. 

Highlighting that genuine accessibility begins with human understanding, not just infrastructure, Majed Al Joker, Chief Operating Officer at Dubai Airports said: "True inclusion starts with people. The comprehensive, IBCCES-accredited training has been rolled out across the two airports.  Frontline teams from Dubai Airports and key partners including Dubai Police, the General Directorate of Identity and Foreigners Affairs, Dubai Customs, dnata, Dubai Duty Free, Dubai Corporation for Ambulance Services, and Dubai Taxi Company, Emirates, flydubai, in addition to other airlines and concessionaires operating from DXB have integrated the training into their operations, to create a consistent, supportive environment throughout the travel experience. Employees are taught sensory awareness, effective communication, and techniques to reduce anxiety to enable them to better support and connect with neurodiverse individuals. 

Trained Dubai Airports’ Guest Experience Ambassadors, identifiable by Sunflower pins, are positioned at key touchpoints throughout DXB and DWC to provide specialised assistance and informed support to autistic guests and their families.

Throughout Autism Acceptance Month, DXB’s Smart Gates operated by the General Directorate of Identity and Foreign Affairs (GDIFA), are illuminated in blue in solidarity with the autism community. Sunflowers, an international marque for hidden disabilities, are also displayed across DXB terminals to promote awareness.

DXB continues to enhance accessibility while nurturing meaningful human connection. By equipping frontline teams with autism-inclusive training and embedding understanding across every touchpoint, Dubai Airports ensures guests feel seen, supported, and respected—not just assisted.

Services include the DXB Travel Planner, an online visual guide that helps guests and families prepare for their journey in advance and the Sunflower Lanyard, a discreet identifier for hidden disabilities that provides access to priority lanes and an autism-friendly route through check-in, passport control, security checkpoints, and boarding. 

Other key offerings include complimentary two-hour parking, dedicated taxis, and wheelchair services, along with the Assisted Travel Lounge in Terminal 2, a quiet, sensory-friendly space – all part of DXB’s commitment to making travel accessible to everyone.

Through its "We All Meet the World Differently" initiative, Dubai Airports continues to drive awareness of neurodiversity, working with the Community Development Authority, autism organisations, schools, and advocacy groups. 

Daily total traffic is set to average 276,000 guests, with the sharpest rise projected in the first week of April. Departures during the Eid week are anticipated to surge by 19% compared to average weekly volumes over the past month, reflecting a significant seasonal uplift.

With schools breaking for spring, demand remains strong for key VFR (visiting friends and relatives) markets such as India, Pakistan, and the United Kingdom, alongside a notable rise in leisure travel, including an increase in traffic to Sri Lanka, Türkiye and Italy.

To support smooth journeys during this peak period, Dubai Airports is urging guests to use the recently introduced DXB Express Maps, a smart wayfinding tool that provides real-time navigation across all terminals. By scanning a QR code displayed on any flight information screen, guests can locate their gate, browse the full array of dining and retail options, or find nearby facilities with ease.

Dubai Airports is also ready with enhanced services for People of Determination (PoD) through clearly marked accessibility routes, discreet support for guests wearing Sunflower Lanyard from trained staff wearing Sunflower pins, and a dedicated Assisted Travel Lounge in Terminal 2.

In collaboration with airline, service and commercial partners, and government authorities, Dubai Airports is working to ensure seamless guest flows across all touchpoints throughout the holiday period.

This year’s results exceeded our forecast by almost 200,000 in guest numbers, underscoring the strength of DXB’s global appeal. New benchmarks
With connections to 272 destinations across 107 countries served by 106 international airlines, DXB continues to set the standard as one of the world’s most connected airports.
DXB handled 2.2 million tonnes of cargo during 2024, a sharp increase of 20.5% from last year when the hub registered 1.8 million tonnes in annual cargo.
The number of all flight movements increased by 5.7% in 2024 to reach 440,300, with a load factor of 78.1, a marginal growth of 0.3% for the year.

Operational excellence
DXB achieved an incredible milestone in 2024 by handling 81.2 million bags while maintaining an industry-leading success rate of 99.45%. This translates to just 5.5 mishandled bags per 1,000 guests, beating the international standard of 6.9 bags/1000 guests as reported by SITA. Despite the massive surge in guest numbers, 98.2% of guests waited less than 10 minutes at departure passport control and 99.2% guests waited under five minutes at security.

Since 2014, DXB has led the ACI rankings as the world’s busiest international airport. Over the past decade, it has welcomed more than 700 million guests on over 3.3 million flights. This remarkable journey has been defined by operational innovation, a dedication to quality, and the collective spirit of the oneDXB community. A community that is frequently recognised for delivering exceptional guest experiences at the oneDXB Chairman’s Awards.

Strong Q3

The momentum from the first half of 2024 carried into Q3, during which DXB managed 23.7 million guests, significantly contributing to the year-to-date total of 68.6 million — a growth of 6.3% compared to the same period in 2023. Over 111,300 flights were handled in Q3, propelling the total flight movements (all operations) for the first nine months to 327,700, up 6.4% year-on-year. 

DXB’s ability to handle such high volumes seamlessly reflects the dedication of its team and partners to providing an efficient and world-class guest experience. By leveraging advanced technologies, such as biometrics and real-time tracking systems, guests continue to enjoy a seamless and elevated journey.

Top Markets and Destinations

India continued to lead as the top destination market with 8.9 million guests over the nine-month period. Saudi Arabia followed with 5.6 million guests, marking a 15.2% increase, while the UK accounted for 4.6 million guests, a 4.7% growth year on year. Pakistan and the USA contributed 3.4 million and 2.6 million guests, respectively, and Germany recorded 2.0 million guests.

London remained the top city destination with 2.9 million guests, followed by Riyadh, which saw strong growth at 2.3 million guests — a 25.8% increase. Other key city destinations included Mumbai (1.8 million), Jeddah (1.7 million), New Delhi (1.6 million), and Istanbul (1.3 million). 

During this period, DXB processed 60.1 million bags with an industry-leading accuracy rate of 99.3%. Approximately 92% of arriving baggage for terminating guests was delivered within 45 minutes of the aircraft arriving on stand. These figures highlight DXB’s unwavering commitment to operational efficiency, showcasing its capability to manage high traffic volumes with precision, maintaining smooth operations and a top-tier airport experience.

Direct Traffic and Winter Growth 

DXB expects to welcome 23.2 million guests in the final quarter, a period known for high direct traffic, driven by expats travelling home for the festive season and visitors arriving to enjoy the UAE’s packed winter calendar. Around 60% of Q4 traffic is forecast to be direct, compared to 50% in Q3 and 55% for the full year.

Major global events and attractions, from the DP World Tour Championship, Emirates Dubai 7s, festive markets and famed New Year’s Eve celebrations, to GITEX Global and ADIPEC – in the neighbouring emirate of Abu Dhabi – draw millions of international guests. The cruise season is also in full swing, with many passengers set to pass through Dubai’s ports as cruise operators capitalise on the city’s world-class infrastructure and superior air and sea connectivity. 

This bustling period further underscores Dubai’s appeal as a warm and vibrant winter escape, particularly for travellers from colder and rainier regions seeking sunshine and premium experiences. Growth is expected from Western Europe, with an increase of 237,000 seats (vs. Q3), and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) region, adding 301,000 seats, supported by home-based carriers and new airlines, including ITA, Condor, Hainan and Druk Air, which introduces a new route to Paro, in western Bhutan, are also new to the network, and Dubai World Central - Al Maktoum International (DWC) welcomes Transavia and Eurowings. This addition of airlines and destinations reinforces DXB’s status as one of the most connected airports globally.

A Strong Foundation for 2025

DXB retained its title as the world’s busiest international airport for the tenth consecutive year, unveiled by the Airports Council International (ACI) earlier this year. With its robust performance so far and the anticipated surge in Q4, its 2024 annual traffic is now forecast to reach 91.9 million guests – the highest in its 64 years. This performance underscores its operational excellence and the increasing share of direct traffic, mirroring Dubai’s broader evolution as a sought-after city for tourism, business, and long-term living, evidenced by its recent ranking as the top city in the Middle East and Africa and among the top five cities globally in the ‘Global City Index 2024’^[1].

With the groundwork laid in 2024, DXB is well-positioned for continued success, ready to maintain its leadership in global aviation and redefine the travel experience for guests while paving the way for future growth and innovation.

With the national anthem resonating and the flag lifting towards the morning sky, the celebration embodied the UAE’s spirit of unity, pride, and collaboration. Held at the Park Hyatt, the evening highlighted more than 15 categories, recognising partners who set the standards in customer service, operational excellence, sustainability, and visual impact. The awards celebrated those whose contributions elevate the oneDXB community and make DXB a destination of choice for millions each year.

In the Commercial categories, JCDecaux was recognised for Partnership Excellence, McDonald’s for Excellence in Sustainability Practices, Uber for Excellence in Guest Experience and Hospitality, Five Guys for Excellence in Marketing Campaign Development, and Emirates Leisure Retail took home the Above & Beyond Excellence Award.

As the awards resumed after the pandemic pause, the evening’s winners were a reminder of the resilience and innovation within DXB’s partner community, which continues to make Dubai a world leader in aviation.

The event was hosted by popular radio personality and influencer Kris Fade, who kept the energy high as he led the evening’s recognitions. The crowd enjoyed lively entertainment, including music from DJ Ruben and a standout performance by NotSoHuman, adding an upbeat vibe to the celebration.

The “Transformation” certification is awarded to airports that realise absolute emissions reductions and drive systemic change with its stakeholders. In strategic alignment with the UAE, Dubai Airports is playing a vital role in supporting the country’s Net Zero 2050 strategy— through its commitment to minimising its environmental impact and enhancing operational efficiency, with a comprehensive focus on decarbonisation, resource conservation, and the adoption of cutting-edge technologies.

DXB has made significant progress through key initiatives and partnerships aimed at advancing sustainable aviation. A recent example is the collaboration with dnata and Emirates National Oil Company (ENOC), transitioning dnata’s non-electric airside fleet to a biodiesel blend, reducing carbon emissions by over 3,500 tonnes annually.

Other initiatives include a partnership with Etihad Energy Services to enhance energy efficiency through building and lighting retrofit and solar integration, and a collaboration with BEEAH Group, reducing landfill waste by 60% through an innovative food waste treatment plan. DXB’s adoption of the ‘Follow the Greens’ system has also optimised aircraft taxiing, cutting fuel consumption and emissions. Other successful initiatives include active engagement with ‘Airports of Tomorrow’, a collaborative venture by the World Economic Forum (WEF) and ACI, to steer the aviation industry toward net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. 

The recently launched oneDXB Sustainability Alliance, a network of airport partners, is further driving sustainability by exploring over 180 additional potential decarbonisation projects.

The Level 4 ACI Accreditation affirms Dubai Airports’ leadership in sustainability and positions DXB as a benchmark in the global airport community.

The study, compiled by global research firm Oxford Economics, includes an assessment of direct economic activity generated by the aviation sector, indirect activity generated through the sector’s supply chain, and induced activity supported through wage-funded consumption by the local aviation workforce. The study also assesses the catalytic impact of tourism spending facilitated by the aviation sector in Dubai.

Aviation sector’s contribution to Dubai economy
In 2023, Dubai’s aviation sector, consisting of Emirates Group, Dubai Airports (including Dubai International and Dubai World Central - Al Maktoum airports), and other aviation sector entities¹ are estimated to have supported AED 137 billion (USD 37.3 billion) in gross value added² (GVA), equivalent to 27% of Dubai’s GDP.  This included the core economic impact of AED 94 billion, and AED 43 billion from the catalytic impact of aviation-facilitated tourism. These figures are projected to increase steadily, with aviation activities facilitated by Emirates and Dubai Airports contributing AED 196 billion, or 32% of Dubai’s forecasted GDP by 2030 (in 2023 prices). 

Aviation-led activity also accounted for 631,000 jobs across Dubai, equivalent to one in five jobs in the emirate in 2023. A further 185,000 aviation-linked jobs are expected to be created by 2030, with the total number of jobs supported by Dubai’s aviation sector forecast to grow to 816,000 jobs. 

A previous economic impact report released by Oxford Economics in 2014 found that the aviation sector contributed 27% of Dubai’s GDP and supported 417,000 jobs. While the latest results indicate the share of Dubai’s GDP has remained stable, the sector’s gross value added has increased in real terms, with the current figures reflecting faster growth across other sectors, as well as diversification in the wider economy over the past decade. 

Dubai’s vital investment to futureproof its aviation sector and ensure it remains an economic driver, is evident in ongoing major investments to expand capacity and operations at Dubai International, in addition to a new generation facility at Dubai World Central - Al Maktoum International. The new AED 128 billion airport will be five times the size of Dubai International, with the first phase to be completed in 10 years. When fully completed, Dubai World Central - Al Maktoum International will consist of over 400 aircraft stands, with capacity to serve 260 million passengers annually. The expansion of Dubai World Central - Al Maktoum International is not included in the study’s main impact results³; however, the construction project is expected to contribute an estimated AED 6.1 billion to Dubai’s GDP in 2030, as well as support 132,000 jobs. 

The new airport and surrounding infrastructure will contribute to Dubai’s Economic Agenda (D33), which aims to strengthen the emirate’s trade and tourism footprint. D33’s progressive development plans also seek to make Dubai one of the most connected cities by adding 400 destinations to its foreign trade map, in addition to making it one of the top five logistics hubs in the world. 

Aviation and tourism in Dubai
Aviation is also the driving force behind the growth of international tourism to Dubai. As one of the most frequented destinations in the world, visitors stayed an average of 3.8 nights in 2023⁴, spending an average of AED 4,300⁴ on hotels, restaurants, attractions and shopping. According to the report, international visitors flying to Dubai spent an estimated AED 66 billion last year.

In total, aviation-facilitated tourism spending is estimated to have contributed: AED 43 billion in gross value added, or 8.5% of Dubai’s GDP, supporting 329,000 jobs. More than half of GVA, AED 23 billion, was generated by those flying to Dubai with Emirates. Tourism to Dubai is projected to grow significantly over the next six years, with aviation-facilitated tourism spending expected to support AED 63 billion in gross value added, equivalent to 10% of Dubai’s projected GDP, as well as one in eight Dubai jobs.

The MoU was signed by H.E. Jamal Al-Hai, Deputy CEO of Dubai Airports and Miatha Al Shamsi, CEO Community Empowerment Sector of CDA, in the presence of H.E. Hessa bint Essa Buhumaid, Director General of CDA, in the presence of senior representatives from both organisations and the wider aviation community attending the Expo.

The two entities will work together to identify and address key needs, leveraging CDA's expertise to implement effective solutions. By sharing resources and knowledge, they aim to contribute to Dubai's broader social agenda, ensuring that DXB and DWC become a place where every guest feels welcomed and supported.

Highlighting the importance of this partnership, Jamal Al-Hai said, “Working with the Community Development Authority is crucial in our mission to make our airports a more inclusive space. Their insights will help us address specific needs, setting a new benchmark for how airports can support all travellers. This MoU represents our joint effort to break down barriers and shape a future where air travel is accessible for everyone.”

Under the agreement, Dubai Airports will incorporate CDA’s guidance to improve services, including using the Sanad communication platform. The Sanad Relay Center connects people with hearing disabilities to sign language specialists via video calls, facilitating smoother communication. To support this, Dubai Airports will map the service within its centres, procure necessary equipment, and train frontline staff.

Additionally, Dubai Airports will align its processes with CDA’s existing channels to safeguard the rights of people of determination (POD), ensuring a safe environment free from discrimination. This includes linking the system to their customer service platform for quick and effective response to any concerns. The partnership also supports the integration of the Sanad Smart Card, offering tailored privileges and services for people with disabilities. Dubai Airports will help build a database to design targeted programmes and encourage wider stakeholder participation.

A joint annual calendar of events will be curated, with Dubai Airports and CDA planning free events in collaboration with other POD centres. This collaboration further brings benefits such as expertise support for DXB’s Autism Project, joint promotional campaigns, enhanced staff training, and contributions to inclusive airport design principles. 

Dubai Airports has introduced several initiatives to support people of determination, including the Sunflower Lanyard programme, which discreetly identifies guests with hidden disabilities and grants them access to priority lanes and an autism-friendly route. A pre-travel planner offers a visual guide to ease navigation, and a bespoke training programme for 33,000 staff enhances understanding of visible and non-visible disabilities. Additional support for POD at DXB includes complimentary parking, dedicated taxis, wheelchair services, and specialised assistance at customs.

In the presence of His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, Chairman of Dubai Airports, and Chief Executive, Emirates Airline and Group, and His Excellency Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Vice Chairman of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, Managing Director and CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), Dubai Airports announced a landmark collaboration with Etihad Clean Energy Development Company, a wholly-owned subsidiary of DEWA, to launch the world's largest rooftop solar panel installation project at an airport.

To solidify this ambitious initiative, Dubai Airports and Etihad Energy Services Company formalised an agreement during the prestigious World Green Economy Summit organised by the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, and the World Green Economy Organization. The event, held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, took place at the Dubai World Trade Centre from 2 to 3 October 2024.

The agreement was signed by Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports and Dr. Waleed Alnuaimi, CEO of Etihad ESCO.

Sharing his insights on the initiative, Griffiths said, “Airports are significant energy consumers, but with that comes tremendous opportunity and responsibility to drive real change. For us, this is not just about installing solar panels; it’s about embedding sustainability into the core of everything we do. Every kilowatt we generate from renewable sources brings us closer to shrinking our carbon footprint and future-proofing our operations. This is about setting the standard and leading the way for what a truly sustainable airport can achieve.”

His Excellency Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer said: "This initiative aligns with His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum's vision to establish Dubai as one of the most sustainable cities in the world. While our roadmap outlines clear targets of achieving 25% of the energy mix from clean energy sources by 2030, and 100% by 2050, we are proactively accelerating our efforts. We anticipate surpassing these goals, potentially reaching 27% clean energy capacity as early as 2030, which would enable us to achieve our 2050 vision ahead of schedule. Undoubtedly, innovation and cutting-edge technologies are instrumental in expediting our progress towards a greener future.

This phased project of total 39MWp of clean energy, which will be fully operational by 2026, involves the installation of 62,904 solar panels across Dubai International (DXB) and Dubai World Central - Al Maktoum International (DWC) airports, set to generate 60,346MWh annually. It marks a significant stride toward decarbonising airport operations.

The solar panels, which will span passenger terminals and concourses across both airports, are expected to offset 23,000 tonnes of CO2 annually — equivalent to taking 5,000 cars off the road or powering 3,000 homes for a year. The energy generated will meet 6.5% of DXB’s power needs and 20% of DWC’s, reinforcing Dubai Airports' long-term vision for cleaner, smarter, and more sustainable operations.

Dr. Waleed Alnuaimi, CEO of Etihad ESCO, remarked, “Our longstanding partnership with Dubai Airports plays a pivotal role in our strategy to accelerate Dubai’s sustainability agenda. Majed Al Joker, Chief Operating Officer at Dubai Airports, inaugurated the meeting, which addresses critical topics including runway safety, advancements in firefighting technology, and ensuring the resilience of airport infrastructure in response to climate change.

This pilot lounge is part of a multi-million-dirham programme, with future expansion plans already in place to open similar lounges in other terminals.

The interior design reflects Dubai’s forward-thinking spirit, blending modern aesthetics with functionality. Guided by the Dubai Universal Design Code, the lounge features designated wheelchair areas, tactile surfaces for easy navigation, dedicated seating for the hearing-impaired that facilitates face-to-face communication with employees, a decompression zone for individuals with autism, and a dedicated area for unaccompanied minors. Materials, finishes, and lighting have been thoughtfully selected to create a serene atmosphere, offering travellers a peaceful retreat.

The flagship lounge is a key element of Dubai Airports' broader POD strategy, designed to cater to the diverse needs of all guests. These efforts have garnered significant recognition for Dubai Airports. In 2022, DXB received an accreditation from the Airports Council International (ACI) under its Accessibility Enhancement Accreditation Programme, a first-of-its-kind initiative that recognises global airports’ commitment to accessible travel operations. The airport was also certified as Autism-friendly by Dubai Autism Centre (DAC) and became the first international airport to earn a certified Autism Centre (CAC) designation, awarded by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES).

Marking an 8% year-on-year increase in guests, DXB has established its position as a globally preferred gateway, boosted by strong connectivity with key international markets, while reaffirming its central role in supporting Dubai’s economic growth.

Dubai attracted 9.31 million international visitors in H1 2024, reflecting its burgeoning appeal as a global hub for talent, enterprises, and investors. These figures, recently released by Dubai’s Department of Economy and Tourism, tie in closely with the growth of Dubai’s GDP, which reached AED 115 billion in Q1 2024, up 3.2% from the previous year.

Established and growing markets
The size and significance of DXB’s established and growing markets including South Asia, Western Europe, the GCC, and East Asia has played a crucial role in the airport’s continued success. In the first half of 2024, India remains DXB’s top destination country with 6.1 million passengers, while traffic from China exceeded 1 million passengers, representing 80% year-on-year growth and a 90% recovery compared to 2019 levels.

DXB’s top destination countries after India are Saudi Arabia with 3.7 million guests, the United Kingdom with 2.9 million guests and Pakistan with 2.3 million guests. Other significant markets include the United States (1.7 million guests), Russia (1.3 million), and Germany (1.3 million). The top three city destinations were London with 1.8 million guests, Riyadh (1.6 million), and Mumbai (1.2 million).

DXB is connected to 269 destinations across 106 countries, served by 101 international airlines, reinforcing Dubai’s position as a leading global business and logistics hub.

Key figures
The total number of flight movements reached 216,000, a 7.2% increase compared to the first six months of last year. The busiest month was January with 7.9 million guests. DXB efficiently managed 39.7 million bags in the first half of the year, a 6.7% year-on-year increase, marking the highest-ever baggage volume handled in the first half of the year. Highlighting the airport’s commitment to operational excellence, impressively, 92% of all arriving baggage was delivered to guests terminating at DXB within 45 minutes of the aircraft arriving on stand.

The average number of guests per aircraft movement was 213, and the load factor remained steady at 77% compared to H1 2023. Direct traffic accounted for 56% of the total, witnessing a slight increase, while transfer traffic comprised 44%. Meanwhile, during the second quarter of 2024, the airport saw 21.8 million guests, an increase of 7.5% compared to the same period last year and total movements were recorded at 107,000.  

Enhancing the guest experience
As part of Dubai Airports’ continuous efforts to enhance the guest experience, with a focus on operational excellence and seamless travel experiences, new developments will be rolled out in the coming months. These include colour-coded car parks for easier navigation, a new signature aroma in Al Majlis to create a welcoming atmosphere befitting the VIP facility, and an advanced queue management system. 

The real-time monitoring system used at DXB helps the airport anticipate and prevent queues from building up across touchpoints, ensuring a smoother and more efficient journey for all guests. During H1, 98% of guests experienced less than 10 minutes of wait times at departure passport control and the same percentage waited less than 15 minutes at arrivals passport control.  95% of guests at departure security screening waited less than three minutes.

The new facility seamlessly and securely connects publicly accessible areas with the secured areas of the terminal, allowing guests to claim their luggage without the need to go through additional screening processes. This improvement enhances safety and reduces waiting times for guests, making the overall airport experience smoother and more efficient. 

The launch of this service exemplifies the strong collaboration between Dubai Airports and its service partners, including Dubai Police, Dubai Customs, and dnata.

Over the past year, the introduction of a sophisticated Material Requirement Planning (MRP) tool, powered by artificial intelligence and machine learning, helps the inventory team predict future spare parts consumption. With parts on hand, the team can promptly execute engineering work orders, resulting in quicker maintenance responses and fewer disruptions for airport guests.

The MRP tool has improved forecast accuracy by 30%, allowing for precise inventory planning and reducing excess stock by 12%. This optimisation enhances capital utilisation and ensures that resources are available when needed.

Emmanuel Augustin, VP of Supply Management at Dubai Airports said, "We leveraged AI and real-time data to streamline our inventory management, improve efficiency and enhance the quality of service we provide to our key customers, both our internal business functions and the millions of guests who travel through the airport. As the first airport in the region and the first government entity in Dubai to implement this system, it underscores our commitment to innovation and operational excellence.” 

Improved forecasting has led to a 24% increase in service levels, enabling faster response times for facility maintenance and enhancing the overall guest experience. The reduction of ageing work orders by 82% ensures that maintenance tasks are addressed promptly, minimising downtime and maintaining high standards of airport operations.

The automation of the inventory ordering process has improved efficiency by 400%, seamlessly integrating the creation of purchase requisitions and significantly reducing manual workloads. 

The advanced data analytics provided by the MRP tool have strengthened decision-making processes, allowing Dubai Airports to leverage real-time data for enhanced performance. This has also ensured adherence to new regulations, maintaining the airport’s commitment to operational excellence and regulatory compliance.

The stunning design, created by Moza Al Mheiri, a talented Emirati member of the Dubai Airports design team, was inspired by the rich heritage and timeless charm of Dubai's bustling streets. Drawing inspiration from traditional patterns, the design brings to life the narrow, winding alleys, iconic architecture, and vibrant cultural elements.

Dubai Airports, in collaboration with Alokozay, is distributing iftar meals and warm beverages to nearly 60,000 guests across DXB’s terminals throughout the holy month of Ramadan. An annual tradition at DXB for many years, this initiative serves as a testament to Dubai Airports' dedication to prioritising the convenience and comfort of guests, while also underscoring its commitment to their wellbeing during this holy month.

Majed Al Joker, Chief Operating Officer of Dubai Airports, said: "We’re proud to uphold this annual tradition. Traffic figures 
In 2023, DXB witnessed a surge in guest numbers, reaching a total of 86,994,365, an impressive year-on-year increase of 31.7%. Just under a per cent higher than the guest numbers recorded in 2019 (86.4 million), the numbers were driven by robust growth in the second half of the year during which the airport recorded a total of 45.4 million guests. 
With 7.8 million guests, December was the busiest month in the fourth quarter during which the airport welcomed a total of 22.4 million guests, a year-on-year growth of 13.8% compared to Q4 of last year. Q3 remained the quarter with the highest traffic since 2019 with 23 million guests while August, with 7.9 million guests, was the month with the highest traffic. 
As of the latest data for 2023, DXB is currently connected to 262 destinations across 104 countries through 102 international carriers.

Operational excellence and guest experience 
DXB processed an impressive total of 77.5 million bags in 2023, making it the highest volume of bags managed during a calendar year at the airport. Despite 24.6% year-on-year increase in baggage volume, DXB maintained its unmatched success rate of 99.8%, with only 2.4 mishandled bags per 1,000 passengers.
More than 95% of guests experienced less than seven minutes of waiting time at departure passport control while the average waiting time at security check on departures was less than four minutes for 97.5% of guests.
In ACI World’s globally recognised Airport Service Quality (ASQ) programme, DXB scored  4.44, the highest result achieved by the airport to date, reflecting the hub’s commitment to continuously enhance guest satisfaction, business performance and airport service quality. 

Top country destinations
India claimed the top spot among destination countries with traffic totalling 11.9 million guests, followed by KSA with 6.7 million guests and the UK with 5.9 million guests. Other country markets of note include Pakistan (4.2 million), the US (3.6 million), Russia (2.5 million), and Germany (2.5 million).

London retained its position as the top destination with 3.7 million guests, followed by Riyadh with 2.6 million guests, Mumbai with 2.5 million guests. 

Cargo
In 2023, DXB handled cargo totalling 1,805,898 tonnes, showing a slight decrease of 4.5% compared to the previous year. Cargo volumes registered a growth of 20.4% year-on-year in the fourth quarter to reach 506,018 tonnes.

Flight Movements
The double-digit increase in guest numbers during the year continued to reflect in flight movements at the hub which totalled 416,405 in 2023, the highest ever total movements recorded at DXB, and up 21.3% year-on-year.  

Outlook
Initial forecasts indicate that in 2024, DXB is anticipated to receive 88.8 million guests, putting the hub within striking distance of its previous all-time high record of 89.1 million guests set in 2018.

The International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES) awards the Certified Autism Center™ (CAC) designation to recognise organisations committed to understanding and accommodating the needs of autistic and sensory-sensitive individuals. The airport's accomplishment is a pivotal achievement in Dubai's city-wide initiative, led by the Department of Economy and Tourism (DET), working to establish the city as a Certified Autism Destination™ (CAD). IBCCES grants this designation to communities offering a diverse range of autism-certified accommodations, leisure, and entertainment options that can foster a more welcoming environment for autistic guests, those with sensory sensitivities, and their families.

Dubai International (DXB) received the certification following a thorough on-site assessment of all three terminals conducted by IBCCES. During the assessment, IBCCES experienced the tailored services introduced by the Sunflower Lanyard Programme.  The programme discreetly identifies and assists POD guests and grants access to prioritised routes for check-in, passport control, security checkpoints, and boarding, which can be availed when wearing a sunflower lanyard. Specially trained Guest Experience Ambassadors and employees wearing a sunflower pin are also always readily available to assist and support POD travellers throughout their airport journey. 

Complementing this and introduced as part of its ‘We all meet the world differently' initiative, launched in 2022, a bespoke hidden disability service training and awareness programme was curated and delivered to 33,000 airport staff across DXB service providers to enhance their knowledge and understanding of visible and non-visible disabilities.   Additionally, a travel planner was introduced to provide a step-by-step visual guide for passengers with hidden disabilities, to help them navigate the airport before their journey.  Complimentary two-hour parking, specialised assistance at customs and immigration, dedicated taxis, and wheelchair services are all integral to DXB’s POD service offering.

IBCCES has been the leader in cognitive disorder training and certification for healthcare, education, and corporate professionals around the globe for more than 20 years. IBCCES is the only global credentialing board providing travel and entertainment organisations with training and certification from subject-matter experts and autistic self-advocates, and other resources, as well as long-term support that helps them understand how to better accommodate and assist autistic or sensory-sensitive visitors and their families. 

IBCCES also created AutismTravel.com, a free online resource for families that lists certified destinations and connects families to other resources and each other. Each destination listed on the site has met the CAC requirements.

As the festive season gets underway, hundreds of thousands of travellers are expected to take to the skies to reunite with family and loved ones, indulge in holiday getaways or explore exciting new destinations.

At the heart of it all Dubai International (DXB), the world’s most connected and biggest international airport, is primed for peak season, ready to facilitate a diverse range of offerings this holiday season.

DXB will welcome an estimated 4.4 million passengers through its doors between December 15 and December 31, with the average total daily traffic reaching 258,000. The hub is preparing for an exceptional spike in guest numbers on Friday, December 22, the busiest day for the airport, welcoming an estimated 279,000 passengers.

As Dubai continues to cement itself as a popular destination during the winter, a surge in arrivals is anticipated to hit during the last two weekends of the year, with half a million passengers – mainly comprising point to point traffic, expected to arrive over six days from December 22 to 24, and from December 29 to 31.

Whether departing to go home for the holidays, arriving in Dubai to celebrate the festive season or simply passing through, Dubai Airports aims to provide guests with a truly memorable experience.

Across Terminals 1, 2 and 3, the airport will host a series of activities, from a 3D photo opportunity in a giant snow globe and visits form a range of festive performers who will be handing out chocolates and other gifts, to the chance for little travellers to meet Santa and his elves and receive special presents.

Here are DXB’s top tips to beat the festive rush.

• If you’re flying with Emirates, use the airline’s convenient home, early and self-service check-in facilities as well as a city check-in option at ICD Brookfield Place in the DIFC area in Dubai and the dedicated facility in Ajman.
• flydubai passengers should arrive at least four hours before their departure time.
• If you’re travelling with other airlines, arrive at DXB no earlier than three hours before the scheduled departure time. Use online check-in where available to save time.
• Families with children over the age of 12 can use Smart Gates to speed up the passport control process.
• Be aware of the latest travel regulations for the destination you’re travelling to, and be prepared with all the necessary travel documents.
• Weigh luggage at home, assemble documents in advance and be prepared for security checks to minimise stress and delays.
• Properly pack spare batteries and power banks in your hand luggage.
• Say your goodbyes at home as only passengers will be allowed inside the terminals during peak periods.
• Use Dubai Metro to get to and from the airport’s Terminals 1 and 3. Metro operating times are generally extended during festive holidays and peak periods at DXB. 
• Dubai Airports and the Road and Transport Authority have urged motorists to use alternate routes as the Airport Road leading to Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 is expected to experience congestion during peak hours during the busy travel period.
• Access to the arrivals’ forecourts in both Terminals 1 and 3 is limited to public transport and other authorised airport vehicles only. Those visiting the airport to pick-up guests should use DXB’s designated car parks or valet services.
• Once at the airport, enjoy DXB’s world class facilities – including restaurants, duty free shopping, hotel and exclusive lounge access before their flight.

This aligns with Dubai's vision to be the world’s leading disability-friendly city, ensuring a barrier-free community that empowers and welcomes all People of Determination (POD) travellers with hidden disabilities.

A bespoke hidden disability service training and awareness programme was curated and launched, targeting 33,000 airport staff across DXB service providers to enhance their knowledge and understanding of visible and non-visible disabilities. Additionally, complimentary two-hour parking, specialised assistance at customs and immigration, dedicated taxis, and wheelchair services— marked significant milestones in DXB’s commitment to making tourism accessible for all.

DXB customised its airport amenities to meet the distinctive requirements of POD, significantly enhancing their travel experience. To introduce these new services and familiarise guests and their families with the airport environment, the operator synchronised multiple 'Travel Safari' tours in collaboration with specialised centres. Offering a hands-on walkthrough, these tours guided participants through essential airport procedures, from check-in to boarding, enabling them to experience the airport environment before their travel date. 

Savita, mother of Eshan Akash, a student at the Dubai Autism Center, commended the positive impact of DXB's amenities. She commented, “There are many things which POD experience when they are travelling. It’s very difficult for them to express and that’s why anxiety can bring out unpleasant behaviours. In that way, a quiet dedicated sensory area where they can regulate their sensory needs is very important. I’m amazed at DXB, their staff awareness, training and how dedicated they are in understanding our needs. This is the standard I think the world should follow and DXB is now going to be a benchmark for all POD. How we experienced the check-in, baggage claim and boarding gate, it was beyond my expectations.”

Recent partnerships with the Dubai Autism Center, receiving the Autism-Friendly Certificate, and the recognition of Accessibility Accreditation from the Airports Council International (ACI) have solidified Dubai Airports’ commitment to creating a safe, accessible, and empowering airport experience for all.

The operator is working closely with partners and stakeholders on the second phase of the rollout for more innovative solutions, including connected airports, lounges, quiet rooms, and continued airport safari tours.

In the lead-up to COP28, the annual international climate summit being held in the UAE, and on the sidelines of the Dubai Airshow 2023, Dubai Airports hosted a delegation of top representatives from the Airports of Tomorrow community. The group held a Brainstorm Breakfast to select three ideas for pilot projects to be developed by the community. Welcomed to Dubai Airports by Edward Slater, Senior Vice President of Strategy & Planning at Dubai Airports, the group toured key facilities at DXB including the hub’s 140km baggage handling system and the solar energy installation at Terminal 2 – the largest of its kind at any Middle Eastern airport. 

This initiative aligns seamlessly with Dubai Airports' commitment to advancing sustainable aviation practices through strategic collaboration. The company has demonstrated notable success in recent years with several key initiatives, including installing a 15,000-panel solar energy system – the largest at any Middle Eastern airport. Other achievements include diverting 60% of waste generated at its facilities away from landfills, converting 100% of waste cooking oil into biodiesel, and ongoing efforts to integrate electric ground operations vehicles. Facility upgrades for enhanced energy efficiency and the widespread replacement of conventional lights with energy-efficient LED fixtures further underscore the airport's environmental commitment.

Airports of Tomorrow employs a comprehensive approach, tackling hydrogen and battery electric propulsion, the expansion of biofuel and synthetic SAFs, and exploring new innovations in aviation decarbonisation. With ambitious industry-wide goals, such as achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 and scaling up a minimum of 300 SAF plants by 2030, the initiative is helping to harness the power of airport ecosystems to shape a sustainable future for aviation.

This achievement marks a significant leap in Dubai Airports’ broader sustainability goal to reduce DXB’s carbon footprint, while setting an industry standard and inspiring its guests to be more environmentally conscious. Dubai Airports’ waste management initiative outlined an innovative food waste treatment plan to capture and compost more than 2,000 tonnes of food waste annually from food and beverage outlets, lounges, and hotels across DXB terminals and concourses. Dubai Airports partnered with BEEAH Group, a holding company with businesses pioneering sustainability, including through industry-leading waste management, to create and implement the food waste plan. The project was structured in three phases: the distribution of food waste bins, comprehensive training, and the processing of more than 400 tonnes of food waste yearly since its launch.

Dubai Airports' waste diversion strategies include separation of recyclables at the source, on-site composting of organic materials, and close collaboration with key stakeholders like DXB Hotel, lounge operators and key commercial Food & Beverage partners, to ensure effective waste management and the highest possible level of diversion from landfills. It includes a special initiative that captures 100% of all cooking oil used in food and beverage outlets and converts it to biodiesel fuel.

Dubai Airports continues to work with its concessionaires to align operations with its environmental sustainability goals related to waste and water management, and efficient use of electricity. Through a collaboration with Emirates Airport Services Lounges, additional training and awareness resulted in waste reduction, conscious procurement, and energy-saving lighting.  A similar collaboration with Emirates Flight Catering, the largest food producer at Dubai’s Airports, has reinvented itself to recycle glass bottles, compost food waste and reduce waste to landfills.
Waste management at Dubai Airports consists of managing the stakeholders’ waste streams. This consists of aircraft cabin waste (37%) and municipal solid waste generated throughout the concourses and the terminal buildings (55%) both of which make up around 92% of the total waste generated daily. The waste management plan has helped the airport save 38% in operational costs monthly, due to the recovered value of recycled materials.

The annual programme provides Emirati graduates, particularly those with STEM (Science, Technology, and Engineering, and Mathematics) backgrounds, with the opportunity to gain a holistic understanding of airport operations, through three rotational phases across a diverse range of cross-functional job roles. This includes critical areas such as Strategy, HR, and Operations, with a specific focus on AOCC (Airport Operation Control Center) and Airside Operations.  In addition to hands-on experience, participants receive focused career planning and personalised feedback and guidance from industry leaders.
Graduates who successfully complete the programme, which aligns with Dubai Airports’ commitment to nurturing local talent and strengthening, will have the opportunity to kickstart and further develop their careers at the world’s biggest international airport. 

Dubai Airports collaborates with reputable universities across the UAE to attract Emirati graduates interested in pursuing a career in the aviation sector. The next Future Faces Programme will open in May 2024.

ROVAR, a UK-based start-up, won the challenge for its future-focused smart guide, using augmented and virtual reality to enhance the guest experience. The guide offers helpful information throughout the traveller’s journey and allows exploration of the airport pre-departure using augmented reality through smartphone technology. 

The judging panel, led by Dubai Airports' SVP of Terminal Operations Essa Al Shamsi, Director of Corporate Planning Kate Ganley, Vice President of Design Neil Kee, and Senior Manager of Corporate Strategy Shamoil Tayabji, played a crucial role in evaluating the finalists' innovations and guided the selection of ROVAR's smart guide solution. Commenting on the VISTA challenge, Essa Al Shamsi, SVP of Terminal Operations at Dubai Airports, said: "We are thrilled to announce ROVAR the winner of our guest experience innovator challenge. Their solution aligns with our vision to enhance the guest experience and embodies the forward-thinking that our industry needs. This victory is a milestone for ROVAR and we look forward to seeing their idea take flight”. 

The smart guide homepage synchronises with the guest’s GPS,  highlighting services and facilities in real-time for an enhanced brand experience at the airport. Integrated virtual wayfinding ensures a personalised journey, with the added benefit of in-flight content control through the smartphone. ROVAR's solution promises to elevate the guest experience at DXB through AR, wayfinding and personalised retail opportunities. 

VISTA, Dubai Airshow's dedicated start-up event, served as a dynamic platform for innovators, creators, and disruptors within the aerospace industry and facilitated a connection between start-ups and investors. This year's VISTA challenge invited five finalists to present their ideas to enhance the guest experience for travellers transiting through DXB. Each finalist had a three-minute window to showcase their project, followed by an interactive Q&A session with a panel of judges comprising influential decision-makers from the aviation industry. 

Dubai Airports has already implemented a queue monitoring sensor system and invested in self-service technologies with Emirates to enhance customer experience and operational efficiency. Collaborating with the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) and other strategic partners, a seamless biometric path from check-in to boarding was developed. Furthermore, a passenger flow module predicts demand and plans required manpower resources, ensuring secure, fast, and efficient operations from kerb to boarding gates.
